Photos by Evan ParkerScarecrows – in all kinds of shapes and sizes – will line the streets of Coupeville from Oct. 14 until Halloween, in the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual Whidbey Island scarecrow contest.The fall attraction, which is becoming a Coupeville trademark, kicks off with HarvestFest at the Coupeville Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Oct. 14, and provides an opportunity for anyone who wants to build an inventive scarecrow to put their work on show and try for cash prizes. This year organizers hope to round up at least 100 scarecrows, and if they get that many entries, the cash prize for the best scarecrow will be $500. If there are fewer than 100 entries, the prize will be $150 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. Last year there were around 60 entries.The scarecrow corridor is open to all Whidbey Island residents – organizations, businesses, clubs, individuals and families. There is no entry fee. Scarecrows are set up in spaces assigned by the Chamber of Commerce and must remain up until Halloween. Judging includes how well each scarecrow withstands the elements.Deadline for entries is Monday, Oct. 2. Spaces will be assigned by Oct. 6, and scarecrows must be in place by Friday, Oct. 13.Entry forms, which include all the rules, can be picked up on the Southend at the Freeland and Langley chamber visitors centers and the Greenbank Farm.
