“Edna Eckloff throws the Koosh ball as senior citizens enjoy a name game of catch with South Whidbey elementary school kids.Jim Larsen, staff photoThe Competent Kids program ended another year last week with a visit to Bayview Senior Center to renew friendships with seniors involved in the Adult Day Services and Respite Program.The Competent Kids are primary and intermediate school students who spend their time learning and doing good deeds under the tutelage of Marla Shelton and Lorena Welch. The community at large knows them best through their annual Random Acts of Kindness week promotion.At the senior center on Tuesday, the children enjoyed a lunch of hot dogs and ice cream with the seniors during their final visit of the year and then played some games. They got to know each other’s names with a Koosh ball throwing game, then bounced toys around on a huge, colorful parachute.The seniors always look forward to periodic visits from the Competent Kids.These kids are so wonderful, they have so much energy they really perk up the seniors, said Sue Kimmel, director of the Time Together adult day care program. And they taught us how to use the parachute.The Competent Kids year ended Tuesday night with a pizza party at the primary school attended by parents and school staff. “
