Craig, Shafaat and Stanley head to playoffs

One singles player and two doubles players will represent South Whidbey High in the district playoffs at the Bellingham racket club on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29.
At the sub-district tournament in Edmonds Thursday, Jason Craig lost to Shoreline 1-6, 2-6, then beat Lynnwood 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 and qualified for districts next week.
Doubles team partners Oliver Shafaat and Rhys Stanley lost to Shoreline 1-6, 1-6, then beat Lynnwood 6-4, 6-4 and also qualified for districts.
Ben Morgan, Todd Berry and Jeff Carmichael were eliminated.
“Both qualifying teams played their best tennis of the season to qualify for district,” said Falcon tennis coach Tom Kramer. “It was a great effort by all three players.”
On Oct. 18 against Friday Harbor, Morgan (6-1, 6-3), Brendon Toyama (6-4, 6-2) and Berry (6-1, 7-6) overcame their Wolverine singles opponents under cloudy but dry conditions.
In doubles, Andrew McKenzie and Sean Hough won their match 6-1, 6-2 while Oliver Shafaat and Rhys Stanley lost theirs, 5-7, 6-7.
