“South Whidbey’s Relay For Life, June 22-23, is fast approaching, and teams are entering into the spirit of its Mardi Gras theme with numerous fund-raisers. *The Cancer Crusaders team is holding a garage sale on Saturday, June 16, at Useless Bay, and also has money canisters at Casey’s Red Apple, where shoppers can drop their change. At the relay event itself, the team will sponsor Locks of Love, with volunteers donating their long hair to help children with cancer. *Selling See’s candy bars are teams from Washington Mutual, Care Bears, Whidbey’s Coffee, South Whidbey Assembly of God, Freeland Cafe and Soroptimists. The sweet treats cost $1 each. Soroptimists have also been challenged by their president, Tonya Henny, to pledge money for the relay. The more money pledged, the more Henny will cut of her long dark hair.*Assembly of God also has ongoing raffles for a cord of wood ($1 a ticket); a $200 value body care gift basket of aromatics, body massage and pedicure (6 tickets for $5); and an Island Athletic Club couple’s charter membership ($5 a ticket).*The Falcon Fighters High School Team has an ongoing raffle for many different prizes donated by local businesses and residents. For $1 tickets, you might win a work by artist Yvonne Roberts called Moon Beams & Sweet Dreams, the Box of Hope, a knife set or a sequined jester’s hat.Freeland Cafe is also selling Mardi Gras masks at prices ranging from $2 to $6, and is collecting a 25-cent Care Tax on all burgers, with the proceeds donated to their Relay for Life Team. There are two potential haircuts looming for team members: Bartender Toni has donation cans out asking people for their votes to cut or not to cut her long hair. Whichever can has the most money in it by the time the Relay arrives will determine the fate of her long hair, with all the money going to the American Cancer Society. And Layla, Verity Sansano’s 7-year-old daughter and the niece of the three other Sistas of Freeland Cafe, will give her hair for Locks of Love at this year’s relay. “
