In a meet so lopsided that the opposing coach didn’t want to keep track of the score, the Falcon girls tennis team rolled almost without resistance through Burlington-Edison Tuesday.

Taking advantage of a break in the week’s rainy weather, the South Whidbey squad smashed the opposition from start to finish. Opening at Number 1 singles, 2001 state champion Jenny Saephan won her match 6-1, 6-0.

At Number 2, Jackie Gutzmer took a 6-2, 6-3 victory as her senior classmate, Kelsey Simmons, won almost as easily in a 6-2, 6-4 match. Sophomore Anna Gillis finished off the solo matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the Number 4 position.

In doubles action, Paige Jolley and Jenny Newman blasted through a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Maya Kocian and Erin Carmichael followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win, as did Sonya Morphew and Chelsea Miller, who topped the Number 3 Burlington-Edison team 6-4, 6-2.

Playing the day’s extra match, Megan Roosen-Runge and Amy Vogt won 6-4, 6-2 as a newly minted pairing.

Falcon Coach Tom Kramer said both teams were missing varsity players at the meet. The result could be different later this year, he said.

The Falcons will make up last Thursday’s rainout match against Lakewood on Monday.
