“Girl Scouts celebrate birthday, begin service project”

The fete took place in the multipurpose room at the South Whidbey Primary School. Other activities included a three-hour game of Twister, dancing to the Macarena, popcorn and crafts.Matt Johnson / staff photoThe Girl Scout movement began in the United States on March 12, 1912, and each year the occasion is celebrated by Girl Scout Week, with scouts participate in special activities, displays and community service projects.Totem Council Unit 151 had a week of special events, which started with a birthday party on Monday, March 12 in the South Whidbey Primary School gym. The girls took part in carnival type games and dancing, and were treated to cotton candy, cake and popcorn. The weekdays were dedicated to Girl Scout programs: Homemaking, citizenship, health and safety, international friendship, arts and crafts, and the outdoors.The Scouts are now beginning a service project for the Bayview Senior Center, making the front yard beautiful with a gardening project set for April 9-13, from 2-4 p.m. daily.The community can also help, by donating or lending items. Supplies needed include soil, fertilizer, bulbs, plants (lots and lots of them), cement, red paint and cleaner.
