How about a little cheer?

Little football players will be cheered on by little cheerleaders this summer if enough girls turn out for the new South Whidbey Youth Football Cheer League. The league is being organized by Joanna Dernbach who oversees a large youth cheerleading program in Oak Harbor which this year attracted 139 participants.

“South Whidbey girls may be cheering for peewee football later this summer, as they have been doing in Oak Harbor for years.Little football players will be cheered on by little cheerleaders this summer if enough girls turn out for the new South Whidbey Youth Football Cheer League. The league is being organized by Joanna Dernbach who oversees a large youth cheerleading program in Oak Harbor which this year attracted 139 participants. There’s more cheerleaders than players, she said.Dernbach, herself a former cheerleader in her home town in Tennessee, said she is helping start the South Whidbey program at the request of South Whidbey Youth Football. She hopes to turn it over to someone else after it gets off the ground. I wanted to help establish them down there, she said. The new Cheer League is aimed at girls ages 7 through 12. Boys aren’t ruled out, but Dernbach said no boy has ever turned out in Oak Harbor. She hopes 30 to 40 girls will participate on South Whidbey. The girls learn teamwork and sportsmanship and such skills as jumping, tumbling and leading cheers. They raise money to buy their own uniforms. The Cheer League is a nonprofit endeavor.Interested girls can sign up by picking up registration forms available at Dairy Queen and the Pizza Factory. Dernbach is also looking for adult volunteers to help with the program. The deadline to enroll is June 30. The football season starts in August, by which time the girls should be ready to lead the cheering. For more information call 360-240-0850. “
