Juniors awarded Masonic scholarships

Five South Whidbey High School juniors were awarded scholarships from the South Whidbey Masons at the annual school awards program held on May 3.

“Five South Whidbey High School juniors were awarded scholarships from the South Whidbey Masons at the annual school awards program held on May 3. Juniors Jacilyn Gutzmer and Brandon Hern were awarded $200 from the South Whidbey Masonic Scholarship fund; Gena Felton and Timothy Gabelein received $400 each; Hannah Shaafat won the $500 award from Langley Chapter 159, Order of Eastern Star. Gabelein also won a Grand Lodge Scholarship of $1,000. He was one of only four juniors statewide to receive this award and the first on South Whidbey. Attending the awards dinner with the students and their parents were South Whidbey High School Principal Mike Johnson, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Martin Laster; and school board members Jim Adsley and Ray Gabelein, whose won the top award.Three members of the North Puget Sound Heroes of 76 of the National Sojourners, including island member Wayne Smith, presented a program called The Story of Our Flag. The goal of the local Masonic awards program is to increase the scholarship fund principal to a level at which local students will receive a minimum of $500 each.
