“Kiwanis Club volunteers assemble the fireworks booth that is now open for business at Ken’s Korner.Jim Larsen, staff photoThe South Whidbey Kiwanis Club is back in business for another year of putting the spark in the 4th of July.Club members assembled their fireworks booth at Ken’s Korner Thursday and volunteers are now selling sparklers, smoke bombs, Whistling Pete’s, Roman candles, numerous configurations of rockets, and exploding tanks and chickens — among many other fiery and noisy choices with which to celebrate Independence Day.The booth isn’t the only place to buy fireworks on South Whidbey, but it’s the only place that doesn’t charge sales tax due to the Kiwanis’ non-profit status. Greg Smith, the Kiwanian in charge of fireworks, said the lack of a sales tax will save buyers about 8 percent on their purchases.Additionally, money spent on fireworks at the Kiwanis booth goes to a good cause. The club itself takes nothing and all sales are done by volunteers.Proceeds help support a host of worthwhile South Whidbey causes. To name just a few: Helping Hand, Relay for Life, library summer reading programs, South Whidbey Parks & Recreation, the Children’s Center, Big Brother/Big Sister, and various school-related activities.One hundred percent of the profits go back to the community, said Smith.The fireworks stand is located in the parking lot of Ken’s Korner Shopping Plaza, at the corner of Highway 525 and Langley Road. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. each day through the 4th of July. “
