“The city of Langley will pay $13,950 this summer to provide electricity to more boaters docking in its Small Boat Harbor. Freeland’s Sound Electric, Inc. will install nine marine power pedestals on the floating docks in the Small Boat Harbor. The pedestals, which the city purchased used from a Whatcom County marina two years ago, will replace several older pedestals and will make power available to all boaters using the harbor docks.Currently, boaters who tie up at the harbor’s east and west docks have no access to power hookups. Only the harbor’s center dock has electric power.At Wednesday’s regular city council meeting, city public works director Rick Hill said the work fits into the $20,000 budget for harbor improvements this year. He said owning the power pedestals saves the city about $3,000 in equipment purchases. The city purchased 10 pedestals for $50 each.Council member Ray Honerlah, who serves on the city’s harbor committee, said the new pedestals should quickly pay for themselves with the additional fees boaters will pay. Boaters who tie up overnight pay $2 a day for electricity. Those who tie up for a month or more pay $35 a month. Live-aboard boaters pay the highest connection charge, $65 a month.Hill said the electrical work could be done in time for the Fourth of July weekend.SEI’s bid price was the lowest of two submitted to the city.
