The first day of candidate filing week didn’t yield any big surprises in those who are seeking elected office to represent Whidbey Island in different capacities.

The candidates who have filed so far for District 10 state representative, Pos. 1, are Democrat Suzanne Woodard of Clinton, Republican Greg Gilday of Stanwood, Democrat Ivan Lewis of Greenbank.

Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, who currently holds the seat, isn’t running for reelection.

In Pos. 2, Democratic state Rep. Dave Paul, D-Oak Harbor, filed for reelection. Republican Bill Bruch of La Conner filed to challenge him.

Helen Price Johnson, a current Island County commissioner from Clinton, filed as a Democrat for the District 10 state senate seat.

Four candidates have filed so far for the District 1 county commissioner seat, which covers South and Central Whidbey. They are Democrat Nathan Howard of Coupeville, Democrat Melanie Bacon of Clinton, Republican Damian Greene of Clinton and Independent candidate Curt Gordon of Clinton.

Republican Commissioner Jill Johnson of Oak Harbor refiled for her District 2 seat, which covers the city of Oak Harbor. Stephenie “Fe” Mischo of Oak Harbor, a Democrat, also filed for the position.

Oak Harbor resident Christon Skinner and Greenbank resident Carolyn Cliff filed for two separate judge positions in Island County Superior Court.

U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Arlington, filed for his District 2 position. Timothy Hazelo of Oak Harbor and Kari Ilonummi both filed as Republicans.

Filing week runs through 4 p.m. on Friday, May 14. Candidates are restricted to filing electronically or through the mail.
