Oak Harbor man killed while walking on interstate

An Oak Harbor man was struck and killed by a semi truck in Mount Vernon.

An Oak Harbor man was struck and killed by a semi truck while walking on Interstate 5 in Mount Vernon early Wednesday morning, according to a report from the Washington State Patrol.

The accident memo states that 44-year-old Joseph B. Baddour of Camano Island was driving south on the interstate at 2 a.m. when he struck the 52-year-old Oak Harbor man, who was walking south in a lane of traffic, the state patrol reported.

The State Patrol hasn’t released the name of the Oak Harbor man as of Friday morning because his family hadn’t been notified.

The report doesn’t indicate why the Oak Harbor man may have been walking on the highway. It states that the cause of the accident is under investigation. It is currently unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved. Trooper Jacob Kennett said the State Patrol received a call shortly before the accident about a pedestrian whose description matched that of the deceased man charging toward vehicles on the freeway.

Baddour was not injured, the report states, but his car sustained reportable damage.
