“The Port of South Whidbey authorized a new survey of Dave Mackie Memorial Park this week to update previous surveys deemed to be inadequate.Port commissioners authorized Tom Roehl, the port’s project manager, to spend up to $10,000 for the survey. Projects done previously at the park don’t show up on current surveys, Roehl told commissioners at their meeting Wednesday. The new survey was needed so the commissioners know what is in place now before changes at the park are made. The port’s comprehensive plan calls for a new community center at the park. The park may also receive a floating dock at its boat ramp.In other business this week, the commission:* Authorized the expenditure of up to $2,000 for the design of a sewage treatment system for the park manager’s residence at Possession Park.* Noted that the Crab Shack business at Bush Point is now for sale. Eileen Katica of Mercer Island told the port in a letter that she wants to sell the business, which was run by her father, now deceased. Katica said in the letter that she considered operating the business herself but is unable to because of health reasons. She plans to remove her father’s equipment and sell it as soon as possible. The port owns the building in which the business was located.* Agreed to contribute $1,000 to the Freeland Chamber of Commerce to support the Aug. 4 and Aug. 25 musical concerts in Freeland Park. The park is owned by the port but operated by Island County.* Extended for an additional year the lease of a residence it owns at Bush Point to Robert Dickson for $890 per month.* Declined a request by Phil Pearl to fund a telephone booth at privately-held Porter Field. Commissioner Gene Sears noted that paying for the phone would be too far afield for port involvement since it owns no property there. “
