Prosecutor charges Camano woman with murder

“After spending three years trying to put a name to the suspicious shooting death of an elderly Camano Island man, the Island County Prosecutor’s Office came up with a label to its liking Friday morning: Murder.Greg Banks, the county’s prosecuting attorney, filed second degree murder charges with Island County Superior Court against Shoreline’s Linda H. Miley, 57, for the 1997 shooting death of her domestic partner, 67-year-old Jack J. Pearson, Sr. Banks said Monday that the case has been the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Island County Sheriff’s Office since it was first reported. At 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 19, 1997, Miley reported a home invasion at the Vesper Way, Camano Island home she shared with Pearson. According to a statement filed by sheriff’s Detective Robert Clark, Pearson was found dead by sheriff’s deputies arriving at the crime scene. He had been bludgeoned, then shot five times At first, Clark wrote, Miley claimed a masked man had broken into their house. She later confessed that she killed Pearson in self-defense.Banks said investigators discovered evidence that he feels was inconsistent with Miley’s reported intrusion by a masked assailant. Miley also admitted to sheriff’s detectives that she took $19,500 from a safe in Pearson’s home. Judge Vicki Churchill issued a warrant for Miley’s arrest Friday and set bail at $500,000. Miley was arrested at her home later in the day. She is currently in custody at the Island County Jail. She will have a preliminary court hearing on Monday, Dec. 18, and will likely be arraigned on Dec. 29.Banks said Miley could be sentenced to 10 to 18 years in prison if convicted. The use of a firearm in this case could add another five years of prison time.Miley lived with Pearson for approximately five years at his Camano Island home. She has no criminal record. “
