A demonstration of the Western-style equestrian sport of ranch cattle sorting will be held this weekend in Freeland.

Roger Braa of Ellensburg, an internationally known instructor of the sport, will conduct the clinic on Saturday, May 22, at Moonview Meadows, located on McMaster Road off Lancaster Road and owned by Kim and Larry McMaster.

The clinic is fully booked, but everyone is invited to come and watch for free, Kim McMaster said.

On Sunday, May 23, a Ranch Sorting Jackpot Competition for clinic participants will be held, she said.

Ranch sorting evolved from the common work of separating cattle into pens for branding, doctoring or transport.

In the competition, teams of two riders on horseback have 90 seconds to sort 10 cows from one pen to another. The cows will be numbered from zero to nine, and the team members must work together to sort them in the correct order.
