“South Whidbey’s girls soccer team breezed to a 7-0 win over LaConner in their first match of the season Thursday night at Waterman Field.LaConner’s Braves, a Class A team, were no match for the young but talented AA Falcons.Falcon coach Paul Arand said that while LaConner was not a strong opponent, he was happy that his team played with a lot of spirit and a lot of energy, and we passed well at times. The Falcons are young, with only three seniors, but much of the talent rests with the underclasses. Sophomore Shannon Skouras kicked off the scoring with 26 minutes left in the first half. The next two goals before the half went to junior Jaci Gutzmer, who scored with 13 minutes left and then with 10 minutes left, making the halftime lead 3-0.After the half, junior Jennifer Barrow took over, scoring quickly twice — the first time with 26 minutes to play, followed two minutes later with another goal. Skouras returned to scoring action at the 22 minute mark, and senior Dail Bates capped the attack with a goal with 4 minutes remaining.Arand expects a greater test today when the Falcons host the Mariner Marauders at 1 p.m. at Waterman Field. The JV teams will meet at 11 a.m. at the Park and Rec lower field. “
