“South Whidbey lost 2-1 to Lakewood with the winning score coming in an overtime period in soccer action last Thursday.The Falcons battled the Cougars to a 1-1 tie after regulation, and then the first 5 minute overtime period began. South Whidbey had a shot at winning the sudden death affair, but a free kick in front of the goal missed. Lakewood came back to score at the 4 minute mark, ending the game.Falcon coach Paul Arand didn’t like the final score, but he had no complaints about how his team played. We played an excellent game all around, he said. The defense was really strong. As always, Lindsey Binford, Deanne Waterman and Michelle Shorr anchored the defenders.Freshman Claudia Gil-Osorio scored South Whidbey’s lone goal 37 minutes into the contest to tie it up at 1-1, a score which held into the overtime period. There are two 5 minute overtime periods possible. If the game is still tied, then a shootout settles it.The defeat left the Falcon varsity with a 3-3 record going into last night’s game against Granite Falls. The JV team beat Lakewood 2-0 to improve its record to 4-0. Thursday the Falcons host Mount Baker with the JV game at 4 p.m. followed by varsity at 6. “
