South Whidbey School Board approves letter to Congress

The South Whidbey School Board wants President Barack Obama and Congress to know educational cuts are unacceptable.

So the school board signed a letter urging federal leaders to “mitigate the drastic cuts to education” that would come with the Budget Control Act of 2011. The bill proposed $1.2 trillion of budget cuts to federal programs, slated to become effective Jan. 2.

“I’m happy to see this go forward,” said Board Chairman Steve Scoles.

The resolution was passed, 4-0, at the suggestion of Board Member Fred O’Neal, the board’s legislative representative. He was absent from the Nov. 28 business meeting while on vacation. Scoles mentioned that O’Neal has a friend in U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s circle of advisors in Washington, D.C.
