Teen accused of crashing stolen car

A 15-year-old Oak Harbor boy is accused of crashing a stolen car while trying to elude a trooper.

A 15-year-old Oak Harbor boy is accused of crashing a stolen car while trying to elude a trooper with the Washington State Patrol early in the morning of June 8, according to court documents.

The boy appeared in Island County Juvenile Court later that day and the judge found probable cause existed to believe he committed the crimes of possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and minor in possession of cannabis.

A deputy prosecutor asked that the teenager be held on $2,500 bail, which is unusually high for a juvenile. He said the teenager allegedly committed the crimes while on probation after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm, is facing a robbery charge in Snohomish County and represents a threat to community safety. The judge agreed.

According to court documents, a trooper started chasing a car after seeing it cross Highway 20 on North Whidbey without stopping at a stop sign. The trooper followed the car onto Troxell Road and observed it speed, cross the centerline, drive on the dirt shoulder, drive in the oncoming lane and go through stop signs, according to the report by the trooper.

The car accelerated rapidly after the trooper activated overhead lights. The car was traveling at 70 mph in a 50 mph zone when the trooper ended the pursuit, the report states.

The trooper continued onto Deception Circle and stopped after hearing a scraping sound and seeing damage to a fence. He discovered that the car had gone down an embankment. The teenager was standing next to the car with his hands above his head and allegedly admitted that the car was stolen, the report states.

The report noted that the teenager was dressed all in black, including gloves and a mask. He had a screwdriver and marijuana in his pocket, the report states.

A year ago, prosecutors charged the teenager with stalking, unlawful possession of a firearm and felony harassment. A report by an officer with the Oak Harbor Police Department states that the boy, who was then in middle school, threatened to shoot a fellow student while at school and later showed him a handgun at Starbucks, court records show.

Last month, the teenager pleaded guilty under a plea bargain to unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree. He was sentenced to 15 days in custody and a year of community supervision.

Before the incident, police had sent numerous referrals to the prosecutor’s office on the student, who’s accused of alleged assaults on other students and bringing a THC vape pen to school. He was also accused of shoplifting spray paint and then spraying graffiti on seven local businesses, court records indicate.
