This weekend’s church services for Sunday, Sept. 13

Local churches announce topics for this Sunday.

Unity service is on forgiveness

Using principles from “A Course in Miracles,” Unity member Keith Mack will discuss forgiveness and how it can bring us the peace we seek.

Good Karma will provide music for the service, which begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Bayview Hall. All are welcome.

Sermon discusses ‘Jesus and Moses’

Ron Wedeking will preach tomorrow’s sermon at South Whidbey Community Church. His topic is “Jesus and Moses,” based on Hebrews chapter 3.

Wenzek is a former pastor of Evangelical Free churches, and he holds a graduate degree from Western Theological Seminary in Portland, Ore.

All sermons are recorded and CD or Windows audio attachments may be obtained by calling 221-8365.

There will also be a church potluck and congregational meeting immediately following tomorrow’s worship service, to which all are invited. South Whidbey Community Church member and retired firefighter Steve Hochenedel will be cooking the main course.

South Whidbey Community Church enjoys a wide variety of gifted and educated speakers at each Sunday morning worship service. Both the church and all its speakers adhere to the National Association of Evangelicals Statement of Faith.

Each worship service begins at 10 a.m. and is preceded at 9 a.m. by two adult learning forums: one is a discussion of the Book of Romans, led by Stan Walker; the other a study of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, led by Jim Craft. And midweek Bible studies continue in the Gospel of Luke, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, led by Art Angst at Rick and Dinah Zapata’s home.

South Whidbey Community Church is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley.

The church is a newly-formed independent, evangelical, non-denominational church. For more information on the church and services, go to www.swcchurch.wordpress.com.

Methodists show ‘Good Food’ film

Missed the showing at The Clyde? See “Good Food” — Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young’s new documentary about Northwest farmers and sustainable food — at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at Langley United Methodist Church.

The film premiered in June at the Seattle International Film Festival to positive reviews. It spotlights a wide variety of Washington and Oregon’s farmers and vendors, from beef to grains, veggies and ice cream. The Langley showing is part of the church’s Hunger Awareness Month.

Non-perishable food donations to Good Cheer and monetary donations to the film’s producers are encouraged.

Rosh HaShanah with Bet Shira

Join Jews from Whidbey Island as they travel to Port Townsend to be welcomed for Rosh HaShanah this year. Their services are lay-led, child-friendly and open to Jews with a diversity of experience and background.

The schedule is 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, for Erev Rosh HaShanah; and 10 a.m.

to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday,

Sept. 30, for the main service. All services will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Jefferson and Tyler, uptown Port Townsend.

Tashlich is 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Beach Park, and a dairy/vegetarian potluck.

Bet Shira does not require tickets; non-members of Bet Shira who attend services are strongly encouraged to make a donation.

Members of the Whidbey Island Jewish Community will carpool to Keystone to meet the 6 p.m. ferry to Port Townsend. There is a walk from the ferry dock to services (or special arrangements for transport on the other side can be made if needed). Overnight home accommodations will be available from Bet Shira hosts on Monday night, and the return to Whidbey follows Tashlich on the

6:45 p.m. ferry.

All overnight accommodations and special needs transportation must be arranged in advance; Stefan will coordinate that with Bet Shira. For those interested in joining, please call Stefan and Heidi at 321-5206 or e-mail stefans@whidbey.com.

Rev. Kit Ketcham speaks at UUCWI

The Unitarian Universalist first principle affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Rev. Kit Ketcham will discuss how this principle can be put into action and reflected in outreach to the community at the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island.

Childcare and children’s religious education begins this Sunday.

The service is at 10 a.m. Sunday at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.
