Wanted child molest suspect back in jail

Michael Cheatham of Oak Harbor, 39, has been charged with multiple counts of child molestation.

An accused child molester wanted on a $100,000 nationwide arrested warrant is back in Island County jail.

Michael Cheatham, a 39-year-old Oak Harbor resident, disappeared in June. He has been charged with two counts of child molestation in the first degree, two counts of child molestation in the second degree and indecent liberties.

The judge issued the warrant for his arrest after he didn’t show up for a June 30 court hearing. In July, Cheatham was arrested in California and eventually extradited back to Island County this month.

On Sept. 10, Island County Superior Court Judge Carolyn Cliff ordered Cheatham held on $250,000 bail.

Cheatham is accused of sexually assaulting four girls in 2015 through 2019, the charges state. He allegedly sexually abused girls younger than 12 years old, court documents indicate.

Cheatham admitted to a detective that he had molested two children on one occasion but denied doing more, the detective’s report states.

Court documents indicate that Cheatham also allegedly “groomed” other girls for abuse.
