Barbara Ann South (Austin) was born on July 22, 1936 to Robert and Bertha Austin in Coupeville, Wash. She grew up on her family’s farm in Coupeville and lived most of her life on Whidbey Island. She passed away peacefully at age 85 on July 23, 2021 at WhidbeyHealth Medical Center in Coupeville.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Bertha Austin; brother Keith Austin; son Robert Shores; and great-grandson Bennett Boyles. She is survived by her husband of 45 years Bill South; sister Eva Burns; and children Deb Rivera, Cathy Benedict (Ben), Frank Shores, Toni Lucio (Richie) and Jette Sprague (Steve). She worked most of her life as a waitress and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She could often be found caring for her cat, playing bingo, watching Family Feud, drinking mocha frappuccinos, or watching the Mariners and Seahawks. Even though her health declined over the last several years, she was able to live at home with her family’s constant support.

Her beautiful smile, sense of humor and caring spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. In her final days, she was surrounded by her family and will be deeply missed.
