Donna Marie Fanning: October 5, 1947 – October 24, 2021

Donna Marie Fanning passed away on October 24th, 2021. She passed while surrounded by her loved ones.

Donna Fanning was born on October 5th, 1947 in Mishawaka, Indiana to Edis Chew and Margarita Quijas. When Donna was 3, she and her mother moved to San Diego, California to live with her grandmother, great grandmother, and her aunts. Donna’s mother remarried, and Donna changed her name from Donna Chew to Donna Brown. Donna and her parents moved around to Tennessee from California, and then to Whidbey Island. Donna had three siblings: Dianne Weaver, Bruce Brown Jr, and Dawn Davis.

Donna attended Oak Harbor High School, and graduated from OHHS in 1965. She gave birth to her first child Kathi Ann in 1964. Donna met Albert Fanning while they both attended Oak Harbor High School and they married in Coupeville in 1966. They remained married until Albert’s death in 2012.

Albert joined the Navy, and Donna and he had a daughter named Jodie Perkins while stationed in Tennessee. Donna’s next child, Michael Fanning, was born on Whidbey Island in 1968. Donna’s next three children were born in California. Billie Crutchfield was born in 1969, and then Amy Christensen was born in 1970. Donna’s last child was born in 1972.

Throughout Donna’s life she held multiple jobs and she spent time being a stay at home mother. She worked for the Navy Exchange and American Greetings. She coached her children’s pony league team in the early 1980’s. Donna and Albert spent many years making crafts and selling baked goods at local farmers markerts on Whidbey Island.

Donna was survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her stuffed bear named Friday. Donna had a vibrant personality. She loved her family and she was extremely giving, but she was also fierce and determined. Donna was an excellent baker and cake decorator. She enjoyed watching sports (football, baseball, and Nascar). She was an avid gardener. She enjoyed watching movies, some of her favorite movies included The Mummy, The Abyss, and Twister. Donna’s kindness is remembered by all who knew her.

Donna Fanning’s funeral service will be held on November 20th at Oak Harbor Lutheran church (1253 NW 2nd Ave, Oak Harbor, WA) at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Oak Harbor Lutheran church.
