Jeanne Dost

Jeanne Ebbert Dost, PhD,  a scholar and a tireless advocate for women, passed from among us at home June 9, 2012. She was the daughter of Margie and William Ebbert,  born August 12, 1929, in Walla Walla, Washington.

Jeanne was a student in economics at Washington State University when she met Frank Dost, who was studying veterinary medicine, in 1948.  They ultimately discovered that they were destined for each other and married in September 1950, just before their senior year at WSU.  When they graduated,  Jeanne was accepted in the Doctoral program in Economics at Harvard University and Frank entered clinical veterinary practice in the Boston area.

They both later took faculty positions at Kansas State University while Jeanne completed her dissertation, receiving her PhD in 1959.   In 1962 they joined the faculty at Oregon State University.   Jeanne founded the Women Studies program at OSU 40 years ago, at a time when such an idea was not easily accepted, and it is still growing and thriving.   They retired, more or less, in 1991 and moved to Sidney, BC for four years, then came to Freeland, on Whidbey Island.  She succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease and leukemia.  She is survived by Frank, daughter Karen and son Frederick.  She was a warrior, and her pain has ended.

A memorial gathering will take place at the Senior Center in Bayview at 1 pm, Saturday July 14.
