Joan Watson, recently of Oak Harbor and longtime resident of South Whidbey died November 24th. She was 85 years old. Joan is survived by her beloved husband Jan VanMuyden, her sister Nancy Hales (Peter), sister-in-law Susan Peterson, and her grandchildren Forie and Jason Helley. She is predeceased by her children, John Lawrence Watson and Elizabeth Anne Williamson, and her brother Frederick Peterson.
Joan attended the University of Washington and held an Estate Planning certificate from Seattle City University. Joan worked in the insurance industry and the law.
Joan moved to South Whidbey in the early 70’s with her family. She was a “founding mother” of Chochokum and a member of the Women’s Motorcycle Club or ERA. Meetings were held at the old Dog House Tavern in Langley.
Joan was a partner in a small insurance agency on South Whidbey. After retirement, she loved most her time spent working for Senior Services. She traveled, loved politics, movies, music and reading. She was someone who was always willing to spend time listening. Her life was best when she was followed around by an old scruffy dog companion.
Burial services will be held at Woodman Cemetery in Langley at 1 PM, Saturday, December 7th.
