John N. Ohm

John Nils Ohm, 85, died Dec. 17, 2013 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, following a tragic fall at his home. John was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Austin, Wash., to John Henry and Beda (Bjork) Ohm. John was raised in Mutiny Bay. He graduated from Langley High School in 1947 and was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

John was married to the former Ruth Gabelein in Langley on Nov. 22, 1955. John was hired by the Washington State Department of Transportation, and he and Ruth moved to Concrete for one year.

From Concrete, they moved to Burlington and Mt. Vernon and then back to Whidbey for the next seven years. In 1964, John moved to Redmond where they have remained for the past 49 years.

John worked for WSDOT, building roads, bridges, overpasses, the approach to the 520 Bridge and many other projects, retiring as an engineer.

John loved to hunt and fish. He was one who made friends everywhere he went and knew the best places to eat wherever he was.

One of his favorite pastimes was having lunch with his high school buddies on the first Thursday of each month at the Rod and Gun Club.

John was a 52-year member of the South Whidbey American Legion Post 141 and a 32-year member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or VFW, of Bellevue.

John is survived by his wife, Ruth, at the family home in Redmond, Wash., and by three children and their spouses: Melody Matthews and Gary, of Bothell; Kevin Ohm, of Bayview; and Kirk and Amy Ohm, of Kirkland; and one sister, Elsie Ball, of Des Moines, Wash.

Ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Johnny, one grandchild, two sisters and one brother.

Graveside funeral services for John Ohm will be held 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at Bayview Cemetery with Mike Shelton and Matt Nichols officiating.
