Margaret Jacobson

Margaret “Margie” Mortland Jacobson, “the Hat Lady,” passed away July 5, 2007.

Margie was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Mortland in the family home on Spruce Street in Sequim on Aug. 10, 1920. The Mortland family moved to Everett in 1923.

She attended Washington Grade School, North Junior and Everett High where she graduated in the class of 1938.

She attended Washington State College where she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and sung in the choir.

Margie lived in Manila and Baguio in the Philippines for several years. Her “claim to fame” while in the Philippines was when she played in a charity golf tournament in the company of Joe Louis, the world heavyweight boxing champion.

For many years, Margie worked for the Everett First National Bank in Lynnwood. During this time, she wrote the first “Woman to Woman” column for the Everett Herald’s south county paper, Western Sun.

Margie and her husband Jake built their home on Useless Bay in 1968. She was very active in her community; she was champion of the cancer drive and heart fund for five years, served many years on the election board at Useless Bay, donated more than eight gallons of blood to the Sno-Isle Blood Bank, was in charge of junior arts-and-crafts booth at the Island County Fair for a couple of years, and drove the Post President of the American Legion No. 141 in the fair parades (in her “ME-MARG” convertible).

She was a charter member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club and held most offices in the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post No. 141. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, and member of the Evergreen Hospital Guild for which she was an avid bridge tournament player. She was a charter member of the SAGGERS Birthday Club and one of her favorite things to do was swim in front of her home on Useless Bay!

One of her most cherished experiences was when her grandson, Chad, earned his Eagle Scout award, presented to him by his Troop 57 Scouts and the Evergreen Council of Boy Scouts.

Margie was preceded in death by her loving and caring husband, Jake as well as her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Mortland and her brother Gayley Dey. She is survived by her beloved grandson, Chad Jeffrey Jacobson, whom Jake and Margie raised from 3 years to adulthood, his wife Jackie and their two daughters Jesica and Alison of Spokane; her son Michael Thomas Waygood and his wife Kathleen of Long Island, N.Y.; her sister, Elizabeth Fillmore Calhoun of Long Island; three grandsons, Cass Jay his wife Wendy and their children Dixie and Savana, Michael Shawn and Garret Dey.

Margie passed on in her home on the beach peacefully and content with her 86 wonderful years of living, loving, caring and laughing. She will truly be missed. Whidbey Island has lost a very dear spirit.
