Richard (Dick ) L. Carrothers passed away in Bellevue, Idaho on March 2, 2025. Dick was born on January 1, 1933 to Ronald and Zinita Carrothers in Charles City, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa where he met and later married Sandra (Sandi) Miller. June 1957, Dick graduated and, with his dental degree in hand, began his career in the Navy. Their military life took them to new homes across the United States as well as Naples, Italy, finally landing in Oak Harbor, Washington. Although they divorced in 1980, Dick and Sandi remained lifelong friends.

After 20 years of Navy life, “Captain Carrothers” retired to pursue his lifelong passion of skiing. He also loved to take road trips to visit his four children and their families.

Dick was a longtime advocate of preserving wildlife around the world and was a champion of all animals. At the local level, he was involved with organizations which allowed him to share his talents and interests — the animal shelter, the hospital, over 25 years with Sun Valley Jazz Festival as well as assisting people with disabilities teaching them to ski. He was quite knowledgeable in a variety of areas and was a great conversationalist, but more importantly, he was always willing to listen. In his spare time, Dick loved to watch his Iowa Hawkeyes play, and take long walks with his dogs along the river.

Dick is survived by his children Cathleen (Jerry), Kim (Dan), Kelly, and Kevin, his sisterJoan Charters, 9 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and one nephew.

Per Dick’s wishes a private family dinner will be held in his honor. In remembrance, donations may be made on behalf of Dick Carrothers to the Mountain Humane (Animal Shelter), Swiftsure Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Center, or Hospice & Palliative Care of Wood River Valley.
