Virginia Totland

Virginia Rose Totland, 88, went home to be with her Lord on March 1, 2009.

Virginia was born on Uncle Jake’s Farm in Arlington to James and Helen (Dooley) Bailey on June 16, 1920.

She went to Moclips High School in Grays Harbor and graduated valedictorian in 1939.

She was six months short of receiving her teaching certificate at Central Washington University when the war broke out. She was sent home to take care of her three brothers.

Virginia then started working for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a riveter, and was named “Rosie The Riveter” because she was one of the first women doing this job, as the men all went to war.

She met her future husband, Oswald (Ossie) Totland, dancing at the Calling School “Happy Hoofers.” They married on Oct. 28, 1948 at Ballard First Lutheran Church.

Virginia left her job to make a home in South Seattle.

In October of 1985, Virginia’s daughter moved her family to Clinton. She encouraged her parents to sell their homes and move to the “Land of milk and honey.” They made it to the “Shores of Possession” where they enjoyed beautiful sunsets for many years.

Virginia was active in Women’s Guild, and was a Sunday school teacher, PTA president and an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland.

She is proceed in death by Husband Ossie, and two brothers, Oscar Madison and Virgil R. Bailey.

She is survived by two children, James (Marge) Totland and Elaine Copple (Mike Claus) and grandchildren Wesley (Aricely) Walters and Karen Walters, and other family members.

A memorial service will be held at 1p.m. Friday, March 6 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland.

God go with you, Virginia.

The Lord’s faithful servant.
