Letter: Drunk driving laws in state need to be reviewed, improved

Editor,

I don’t write letters normally, and here I am with the second one in two weeks.

What is wrong with our state’s enforcement of DUIs? I frequently drive along State Highway 525, between Freeland and Oak Harbor.

I passed the accident scene near Libby Road and the highway in which two pickups collided head-on. The driver allegedly at fault, previously cited with five DUIs, had crossed the median strip and hit the unsuspecting other driver’s vehicle.

Surprisingly, the collision did not result in any fatalities. But, it could just have easily resulted in such.

Five DUIs!

What is inherently wrong with the legislatures, judges, and prosecutors to allow a situation to progress along those lines unabated. This person was in need of a court directed rehabilitation long before everything reached this point, and before it might eventually end in a true tragedy of loss of life and/or incarceration.

The laws need to be reviewed to establish the necessary options beforehand to prevent the tragedies and make our roadways safer.
