As always on South Whidbey, the popular July 3 Celebrate America day-long family party and fireworks show at Freeland Park depends on community donations.

This year is no different, and the outlook at this point is uncertain, said Matt Chambers, pastor at the South Whidbey Assembly and originator of the event that draws hundreds of people every year.

“Some of the largest donors to Celebrate America over the years are again unable to support the event at previous levels, if at all,” Chambers said. “As of the end of May only half of the needed $35,000 has been raised or pledged. This means that each and every one who can help by contributing to the cost is needed this year in order to cover the cost of the celebration and fireworks.”

He noted the cost would easily be covered if every South Whidbey individual or family who enjoys the evening’s fireworks contributed a financial donation. The same goes for area property owners who use the event to throw a yard party or business owners who profit from the swarm of people who come to town.
