South Whidbey artists’ works will be a focus in this year’s International Sculpture Day, a worldwide annual celebration of sculpture held on Sunday, April 24.

Established by the International Sculpture Center, the event aims to raise awareness, appreciation and enjoyment of sculpture across the globe.

Bellingham-based Sculpture Northwest, a nonprofit, is promoting outdoor sculpture in Island, San Juan, Skagit and Whatcom counties. It’s also coordinating awareness of Island County activities in celebration of International Sculpture Day.

The following activities and openings are planned on Whidbey Island on April 24:

• Artists will demonstrate sculpture process and exhibit a large collection of completed works at Freeland Art Studio between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Participants and exhibitors include Lloyd Whannell, Woody Morris, Lane Tompkins, Sue Taves, Dale Reigor, Dan Freeman, Jeff Day, Jan Hoy, Ivan Neagis and Frank Rose.

• At Cloudstone Sculpture Park, Hank Nelson will provide tours from 1-4 p.m. of his 20-acre sculpture park in Freeland. These tours take from 30-90 minutes; protective footwear is recommended. Call 360-331-3913 for details.

• Robert Schouten Gallery will showcase local and regional sculpture at Greenbank Farm. At 2 p.m., Whidbey sculptors Sharon Spencer, Dan Freeman and Lloyd Whannell will lead an informal stroll through the gallery and sculpture garden and discuss what makes them tick as artists, and what process they follow to bring their creations into reality.
