A man trapped under an overturned excavator was rescued by South Whidbey Fire/EMS and transported to Providence Hospital in Everett for internal injuries on Jan. 9.

The district responded to the call at 11:25 a.m. Saturday on Cameron Road, just down the road from the Freeland fire station. Emergency responders arrived to find a man trapped after his excavator had rolled into a ditch. The excavator had to be lifted off of him using power equipment.

“We used a front loader to hold the excavator up from rolling on top of him,” said fire district Division Chief Wendy Moffatt. “It was quite a detailed scene. It took a lot of manpower to get him out of there.”

The man was conscious and stable during the rescue. His entire upper body was trapped by the excavator, with the exception of his head. Moffatt said the man had internal abdominal injuries, but could not confirm the status of the man or release his identity due to federal privacy laws.
