Questions sought for voter forum

The Clinton Community Council is seeking questions to ask candidates for Island County sheriff, county commissioner and state representative at its forum.

The non-partisan event, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Whidbey Island, the Clinton Library and Clinton Chamber of Commerce will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 at Clinton Community Hall.

Doug Hofius, president of the Clinton Community Council, will moderate the forum, taking questions gathered from the public. The topics will center around Clinton- and South Whidbey-specific issues, according to council member Christina Swan.

Questions can be submitted by email at info@clintoncommunitycouncil.org or written on cards at the door.

“We’re just looking forward to anyone who’s interested in the candidates coming and listening to what they have to say,” Swan said.

Sheriff candidates Lane Campbell and Rick Felici, district 3 county commissioner candidates Rick Hannold and Janet St. Clair and state representative candidates for positions 1 and 2 — Scott McMullen, Norma Smith, Dave Hayes and Dave Paul — will attend.

A separate question-and-answer session will be held for each position. Topics will likely cover staffing at the sheriff’s office, pedestrian safety in Clinton, funding for local projects, ferries and economic development in the region, Swan said. Questions are already coming in, but she said the council is still looking for more.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in the forum,” she said.

After the moderated portion of the evening, there will be a chance for the public to meet the candidates and mingle. Light refreshments will be provided.

“We really feel like this is going to be a strong community-based event,” said Swan. “I’m very excited about it.”
