Safety Fair on Wednesday

Puget Sound Energy is hosting its annual Emergency Preparedness and Safety Fair 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5 at its Freeland Office.

“I personally don’t think we’re as prepared as we need to be on the South End,” said South Whidbey Fire/EMS Chief Rusty Palmer.

The fire district will be one of many agencies present to try and remedy this. Palmer said firefighters will provide information on smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, how to make survival kits and other fire prevention and survival techniques.

He said there a number of ways people can work on fire prevention and disaster preparedness.

“People just need to keep working on it,” he said.

Island County Emergency Management will provide maps that identify local hazards, information on how to make plans, keep pets safe, communicate in an emergency.

“Our goal is to give everybody the tools that they need in order to be prepared,” said Eric Brooks, emergency management director.

Representatives from Red Cross, Island County Amateur Radio Club and Puget Sound Energy will also be present. Attendees will be able to enter a drawing for prizes such as a smoke alarm or LED flashlight.
