Now that smoke has mostly cleared from the skies over Whidbey, Island County’s burn ban has reverted back to Type I.

The Northwest Clean Air Agency lowered restrictions on burning Monday and the Island County Sheriff’s Office followed suit, going back to the former burn ban. That means outdoor burns of natural debris is still banned, but recreational fires are allowed in fire pits, grills and stoves.

Last week, the Northwest Clean Air Agency called for a Stage 1 air quality burn ban in Island, Skagit and Whatcom counties because of high levels of harmful wildfire smoke particles impaired air quality. The agency urged people to stay inside.

Air quality was “good” in Oak Harbor Tuesday morning, according to the Washington Smoke Blog.

The current ban is based on the fire hazard. “Atmospheric conditions of reduced moisture levels, low humidity and warmer weather have increased the risk of fire within the confines of Island County,” the sheriff’s office reported.
