A free program for island owners of manufactured homes to seal leaky ductwork and receive other energy-efficient upgrades is being offered through September by Puget Sound Energy.

The service is a $500 value per customer, and promises to save as much as 30 percent on energy bills, PSE officials said.

It’s estimated that there are 3,400 manufactured homes on Whidbey, said Walt Blackford, PSE’s island community services supervisor.

To qualify, a homeowner must be a PSE electric customer living year-round in an existing manufactured home which uses electric forced-air as the primary heat source. The customer also can’t have had a previous energy-efficiency upgrade, Blackford said.

The work will be done by Kirkland-based UCONS. A specialist will test ductwork for air leaks and seal any leaks. Customers can also receive free on-site installation of compact fluorescent light bulbs in high-use areas such as kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms, as well as free water heater pipe wraps, air filter replacement and an energy-efficient showerhead and faucet aerator.

UCONS representatives will be going door-to-door with flyers to see if PSE customers want the service. PSE customers can also request the service by calling UCONS at 1-800-828-8440.
