EDITOR’S COLUMN | Trump is our new president, accept it

I’ve been thinking about a post-election column on the presidential race for more than a week now, debating with myself about what I might say, how I’d say it or whether or not to say anything at all.

My profession, or more specifically my position, demands that I weigh in on such a historical and pivotal moment in our history, but I’ve questioned what good would come of it or whether in fact I could be useful. You see, while I’m no Democrat I am among the millions of Americans who are appalled at the 2016 election results.

Donald Trump, the leader of the free world? God save us, and our genitals.

I suppose I should add Muslims to the list.

And Mexicans.

And women.

And free speech.

And… well you get the point. It’s all been said a thousand times by hundreds of different newspaper editors around the country. I read a news report that claimed over 500 papers endorsed Hillary Clinton while less than 30 cast their support behind Trump. I don’t know if it’s true, but I guess that doesn’t matter anymore. The new accepted norm is that I can vomit out whatever I want to the masses with no regard to its accuracy. No? Those rules only apply to presidents?

That doesn’t seem right to me, but perhaps that’s the way it should be, that only the ambassador of the greatest democracy on Earth, the symbol of freedom to countless millions, can openly lie and endorse hate, bigotry, racism, sexism… again, it’s all been said before. And it’s not like I’m going to convince Trump supporters that they are wrong. A Facebook friend in Oak Harbor argued this weekend that conservatives were right to be upset that our leaders have put “morals” ahead of the economy. Who can argue with that?

See, this is what I was talking about concerning my ability to be useful. Our country should come together and rally behind our new leader. Clinton herself said as much during her concession speech, that whether we like it or not Trump is our new president and that we all must give him a chance. Her words instantly rang true.

It’s just so hard when he’s such a jerk. Oh well, it’s time to quit whining, grab this thing by the … no I can’t say it, and trudge forward. Give Trump a chance. I’m going to, at least until the secret police come get me.
