Dominant defense carries Falcons to win / Soccer

Behind a defense that did not allow a shot on goal, the South Whidbey High School soccer team won 2-0 at Sultan Thursday, Oct. 17.

The Turks put six defenders in the box to slow the Falcons’ attack, but South Whidbey was able to tally twice off corner kicks from Ashton Helseth.

In the first half, Sidney Ollis connected on a six-yard volley with her left foot to start the scoring.

Kelly Murnane scored after the break when she trapped the ball with her body and hipped in a deflected shot.

“I was pleased with the corrections our team made during the game,” coach Terry Swanson said. “Specifically, there were several instances on corner kicks and crosses that we were not picking up on the far post. We adjusted and had several near scoring chances off crosses and Murnane’s goal was off a far post run on the set play.”

South Whidbey (8-0, 12-0-1) hosts Coupeville (1-7, 1-10-2) at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in the final regular season home match. The Falcons will honor their seniors and hold a cancer awareness event.
