Papritz, Zisette place 2nd in state doubles tournament / Tennis

South Whidbey High School’s Alison Papritz and Mary Zisette swatted their way to second place in the 1B/2B/1A state tennis tournament May 25 and 26 at the Yakima Tennis Center.

The Falcon pair lost to the defending state champions Amanda Lin and Maria Russinovich of Overlake 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the finals.

Papritz and Zisette began the tournament by breezing through the first two rounds. The started by whipping Ella Rothlisberger and Bella Gatzmeier of Chelan 6-1, 6-0, and then blanked Rylee Thomas and Alyssa Figy of Lakeside (Nine Miles Falls) 6-0, 6-0.

In the semifinals, the South Whidbey duo defeated sisters Grace and Kate Jung of Cascade Christian 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

South Whidbey, coached by Jennifer Gochanour and Bess Windecker-Nelson, finished tied for third in the team scoring with 10 points, one less than co-champions Overlake and Cashmere.

Coupeville’s Sage Renninger and Payton Aparicio finished fourth in the doubles tournament and the Wolves were eighth in the team standings.
