Dozens run legendary Chum Run 5K

From 6 to 60 years old, they ran the South Whidbey Community Park trails.

Thanks to a scheduled later start, more than 60 racers celebrated the sweet 16th of the annual Chum Run 5K race.

In total, 67 people completed the 5,000-meter race. The fun run June 3 was highlighted by its costume contest, which drew matching-color uniforms and a couple competing as the fabled Tortoise and the Hare.

Former South Whidbey resident Mark Cook, 39, of Keyport, won the race with a time of 18 minutes, 37 seconds. The Chum Run, which raises money for the South Whidbey High School cross country teams, was tailored for young athletes, too. Falcon distance runner Cole Zink, 15, finished in second place in 18 minutes, 45 seconds. Frank Jacques, a 50-year-old competitive distance runner from Langley, took third place in 19 minutes, 27 seconds.

Joey Key, 32, from Bozeman, Mont., was the first woman to complete the course. Key crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 47 seconds. She was followed close behind by Falcon cross country runner Lillianna Stelling, 17. Stelling finished in 21 minutes, 56 seconds. Fellow cross country runner Bonnie Klamm, 17, finished third in the women’s division in 22 minutes, 45 seconds.
