Thanksgiving is a time to take stock of our blessings. In the South Whidbey Record newsroom, here’s some of the things the staff is grateful for:
Publisher Keven R. Graves: I’m grateful my son Liam has a job and is figuring life out. I’m grateful that I live close to my parents and the rest of my family. I am thankful for those little Vitamin D capsules as we head into the long winter’s nights.
Associate publisher Kim Winjum: I’m thankful for my family, friends, dog, health and that I’m able to call Whidbey Island home.
Reporter Ben Watanabe: This summer, I was part of something intimate, beautiful and heartfelt when I officiated the wedding of two of my dearest and best friends, and am truly thankful for the honor and experience. I didn’t mess up any names, which was a bonus.
I’m thankful to have family and friends that continue to invite me into their lives.
And, the following is a small portion of things for which I am not thankful: Diet Coke, donut days, a few scrapes on my car’s undercarriage courtesy of the pre-fix Tokitae’s ramps, ferry-line cutters, ferry lines, auto correct, sharks, snakes, the third season of “The Walking Dead,” any season of “Real Housewives,” and the Seattle Mariners being just good enough to break my heart.
Reporter Kate Daniel: This year I am thankful to have graduated college and — after 10 years of working multiple jobs in horse stables, call centers, fast food joints and retail establishments — to have been hired as a reporter at The Record.
I’m thankful for my fiancé, cats Alice and Kori and dog Rugaru who decided to move with me to Whidbey Island and who, for some reason, elect to hang out with me every day. And, I am thankful for my family and friends, including my brother who still manages to make fun of me all the way from Germany. I’m also grateful for rock ‘n’ roll, books, space exploration and the Internet.
Jessie Stensland, co-editor at the Whidbey News-Times and regular contributor to The Record: The Walmart in Oak Harbor. It’s the perfect place to survive the zombie apocalypse.
Reporter Janis Reid: I’m thankful that that guy finally met their mother. I’m daily appreciative that Jack White still rocks, and that the whole Nickleback thing appears to be over. I’m especially thankful that John Boehner stopped crying in public.
Editor Justin Burnett: One word: Destiny.
