Three people were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday after a head-on collision on Highway 20, officials said.

Around 3:50 p.m., a man in a Subaru was traveling southbound just south of Oak Harbor city limits when he crossed the median and hit the guard rail on the other side of the highway, said Deputy Lane Campbell with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, who told police he thinks he fell asleep, then tried to return to the southbound lane and struck a pickup.

The highway was closed for about an hour to clear the scene.

Several Oak Harbor City Council members were late to their weekly work session meeting due to the closure.
