Letter: Free press shines light on areas that need it

Editor,

Thank you for your editorial and the explanation for your reasoning to publish letters containing racially offensive invective. I too have had local people assure me there is no racism here.

While I do not like to use the term racism, it cannot be denied there is an entrenched caste system; though for some it is the proverbial elephant in the room.

If we do not call it out, how can we argue for change?

Many years ago I heard that just as strong sunlight kills a lot of germs, so a free press will shine light on areas needing it.

If we benefit from keeping a viable watchdog, we must accept a certain amount of barking even if we don’t all agree that it is warranted.
