South Whidbey girls golfer Jenna Kaik opened the summer golf circuit with a tough outing.

The soon-to-be senior and two-time state golf competitor shot a 117 at Homestead Golf Course in Lynden. As part of the Washington Junior Golf Association, the tournament pitted Kaik against some of the state’s best 2A girls golfers, including three in the same district as South Whidbey. Three of the top four girls at the tournament played for Bellingham High School last year, which won the 2A team title in girls golf. Jennifer Paul, 16, won with 87 strokes, Audrey Orem, 17, tied for second place with 88 strokes and Brooke Branigan claimed fourth place with 91 strokes.

Kaik’s previous competitive golf round was the state tournament May 22 and 23 at Lake Spanaway Golf Course. There, Kaik shot one of her best rounds with 95 strokes. The next tournament Kaik competes in is July 2 at Discovery Bay Golf Club in Port Townsend.
