Whale weekend was fun for everyone

Langley’s Welcome the Whales weekend drew hundreds of visitors who learned about aquatic life and celebrated the resident whales. Michaela Marx Wheatley / The Record | Siobhan Wright dresses as a mermaid during the Welcome the Whales parade April 20 that attracted many colorful characters to Langley.

Children prepared all morning Saturday creating costumes, flags and other fun paraphernalia to use in the whale parade at Langley United Methodist Church.

At 1:30 p.m. the parade marched through downtown. Mermaids, jellyfish, even a star fish were among the critters dancing through the streets. Gary the Gray Whale was, for the first time ever, on wheels rather than being carried. Callahan McVay had loaned his grandmother’s golf cart to the whale enthusiasts.

The crowd gathered at Seawall Park for a blessing of the whales.

Dancing, singing and chanting made for a fitting welcome to the whales that have been busy feeding in Saratoga Passage.

Two people even hopped into the water in wetsuits and swam out to extend their welcome.

The whale weekend was organized by the Orca Network and the Langley Chamber of Commerce.
