Whidbey Island’s Spoiled Dog Winery’s Pomo di Moro (“apple of love”) wine won a bronze medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
This is the first time wine made from Whidbey Island-grown fruit has won an award at this prestigious competition, which wrapped up on Jan. 7 at the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds in Sonoma County, Calif.
Sixty professional wine experts tasted and evaluated a world-record breaking 5,050 entries from 23 states during the five days of the competition.
Karen Krug, co-owner of Spoiled Dog Winery with her husband Jack, said Pomo di Moro wine is made from local apples and pears.
“The majority of the apples and pears are grown on our Maxwelton vineyard and farm (heritage trees) and are blended with apples from Island Tree Ranch (certified organic),” Krug said.
Pomo di Moro is a dry white wine in a “chardonnay” style, and is made and bottled at their winery on the Krugs’ farm. Pomo di Moro and other locally made wines can be sampled at the winery co-op Taste-4-Wine shop at BayviewCorner.
