A quiet Fourth for Whidbey firefighters

Several medical calls, a burning stump and a non-injury traffic accident were the most serious of six calls handled by Fire District 3 on the Fourth of July.

Several medical calls, a burning stump and a non-injury traffic accident were the most serious of six calls handled by Fire District 3 on the Fourth of July.

“A 14-year-old boy burned his hand slightly with fireworks at Dave Mackie Park,” reported Deputy Chief Mike Cotton. “Somebody lit off fireworks near Mutiny Bay Road and left a stump on fire that we had to put out, and there was a three-vehicle, non-injury accident on Highway 525 and Sandford Road.

“Overall, it was a quiet, safe Fourth of July,” Cotton noted. “Frankly, the drier it is, the greater the risk there will be a fire, so the soggy conditions helped us from a public safety point of view.”
