There’s a $2,500 reward for information leading to the conviction of those who shot two red-tailed hawks recently on South Whidbey.

The reward is being offered by the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust.

The two hawks, protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, were shot within two weeks of each other.

The first wounded hawk was found off Deer Run Road near Coles Road on Jan. 25. The second wounded bird was reported on Feb. 2 after being found along East Harbor Road near Goodell Road.

Both hawks had to be euthanized because of their injuries.

Hunting the birds is not allowed. If convicted, the shooters may face state charges and federal penalties.
