Make do with what we have | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

After reading last week’s Whidbey Record about the school bond levy issue, it got my ire up.

I want to question the board and superintendent’s thinking. I started first grade in one of these buildings in 1941. The building was new then and has served the district well.

I hear that it will possibly cost too much to make the building earthquake-proof. The buildings have withstood two major earthquakes, one in 1949 and again in the ’60s. Were the buildings deemed unsafe this year, or three to 10 years ago? Is this really the time to move the middle school up to the high school?

I cannot believe with the economic situation we are in, you need to pile more taxes on us. Does the high school football field really need astro turf when many families are going to the food bank and are having difficulty making ends meet?

When times are tough, we need to tighten our belts and make do with what we have. What happened to the maintenance and operation levy we voted for this spring?

I’ve always backed the district with my vote, but not this time. This is not the time.
